Know All 12 Beautiful Body Shapes and Dress Confidently

Don’t know what to wear but you love dressing up? Don’t know what suits and flatters your body? Does the question of should I wear this or not bother you often? Worry not! Know and learn about your body shape and the clothes that suit that particular body type. The varying body shapes and body types in the world make it a better place, and you should know that just because you have some trouble styling, it does not mean there is nothing for you. There is something for everyone and everyone has something. Make it a point to learn more about yourself and see how you flourish with the right clothing!  

Apple Shape

Apple-shaped bodies tend to have broader shoulders and narrow hips with slimmer legs and arms. 

Distinct features include a fullness in the abdomen, chest and upper back. 

What to wear: 

Wear soft textured and flowy fabrics. A-line, short or flowy dresses. V-necks, scoop-tops, tops that fall below the hip bone are recommended. Along with that, try to wear boot-cut jeans, flared-bottom pants, and low waisted jeans. As for shoes, wear sandals with straps, wedges and platform shoes. 

What not to wear: 

Avoid clothes that are tight-fitted, rough-textured and shapeless. Also, avoid turtle or round necks, dresses with waistlines, off-shoulder tops and dresses, boat necks, halter necks, jeggings, boots, kitten heels, necklaces near your neck, and broad belts.

Pear Body Shape

Pear-shaped bodies tend to have narrower shoulders and broader hips. 

Distinct features include a smaller bust, wider hips and a defined waist. 

What to wear: 

Wear bright scoop-neck and boat-neck tops that define your shoulder and make them look wider.

What not to wear: 

Avoid wearing cigarette pants and tight skirts. 

Hourglass Shape

Hourglass shaped bodies have a well-defined waist and evenly balanced hips and shoulders. 

Distinct features include the similarity in the measurements of hips and shoulders. 

What to wear: 

Wear broad belts over your shirt or dress, wrap-around tops and skirts, flowy dresses, skirts, well-fitting tops, fitting jackets, tops or dresses with pleated waist, pencil skirts, ¾ skirts with side or back slits, jeggings, boots, strappy sandals, high heels, peep toes, and necklaces that fall till your navel. 

What not to wear:  

Do not wear shapeless and loose clothes. 

Inverted Triangle Shape

Inverted Triangle Shaped bodies have broader shoulders with well-defined narrow hips creating an inverted triangle look

Distinct features include narrow hips and a defined waist. 

What to wear: 

Ruffles around the neck, peplum tops, jeans with back pockets, low waist jeans, checks and stripes in slanting angle, front pockets in skirts, satin dresses, V-necks, A-line dresses and skirts, fish cuts, shorts, chunky shoes and earrings, slender necklace, long dresses, high-waist pants, bell-bottoms, and sequined skirts.

What not to wear:

Baggy and shapeless dresses and tops, pencil skirts, tapered jeans and trousers, spaghetti and noodle straps, ¾ sleeves, horizontal stripes across your shoulders, baggy waistline, and padded shoulders. 

Diamond Shape

There is an accumulation of weight in the midsection with narrower shoulders and hips. 

Distinct features include fullness in the abdomen and waist area with slimmer legs and arms.

What to wear: 

Go for clothes that have curves, wear belted tops and dresses, fluttered sleeves, off-shoulder or strapless tops, A-line and straight skirts, boot cut and straight cut trousers, medium high-heels and wedges. 

What not to wear: 

Avoid tapered trousers and jeans, big prints, vertical patterns and prints and pencil skirts. 

Top Hourglass Shape

Top hourglass bodies are similar to hourglass bodies with a slightly broader upper body.

The distinct features include a well-defined waist, balanced shoulders and hips. 

What to Wear: 

V-necks are the way to go here, with a selection of darker colours for tops and well-tailored jackets and shirts. Skirts are a big yes because they will highlight your waist. 

What not to wear: 

Avoid baggy jeans and pants, clothes that are loose and stiff, and wide stripe skirts and trousers. 

Spoon Body Shape

Spoon shaped bodies also known as A-shaped bodies have narrow shoulders and waist with wider hips and thighs. 

Typical features are wider and fuller hips and thighs as compared to the upper body and a well-defined waistline. 

What to wear: 

Structured tops, dark-coloured bottoms, A-line skirts and dresses, Wrap dresses and tops, high-waisted pants and jeans and statement accessories. 

What not to wear: 

Tight-fitted trousers, baggy tops, excessive ruffles or embellishment on the hips, low-rise bottom, straight cut dresses and horizontal stripes. 

Bottom Hourglass Body Shape

Bottom hourglass bodies are similar to hourglass bodies with the slightly broader lower body. 

The distinct features include fuller hips and thighs in balance with the upper body and a well-defined waistline. 

What a wear: 

Fitted tops, belted dresses and tops, A-line skirts and dresses and tailored shirts and jackets. 

What not to wear: 

Baggy clothing, low-rise bottoms, overly tight bottoms, and shapeless dresses

Round Shape

Round shaped bodies have a circular appearance with weight evenly distributed throughout the body. 

The distinct features include a circular silhouette with less defined waistline and balanced proportions

Rectangle Shape

Rectangle shaped bodies have relatively similar measurements for the shoulders, waist and hips.

The distinct features include a straight silhouette and minimal curves. 

What to wear: 

Peplum tops and dresses, fitted tops and blouses, tailored jackets and blazers, high-waisted bottoms, belts and waist emphasizers, etc.

What not to wear: 

Shapeless clothes, baggy or oversized tops, low-rise bottoms, etc. 

Lean Column Shape

Lean-column shaped bodies have a straight silhouette with minimal curves and muscle definition. 

The distinct features include narrow shoulders, hips and waist with relatively even proportions. 

What to wear: 

Layered clothing, peplum tops and dresses, belted styles, tailored pieces and wrap dresses and tops. 

What not to wear:

Teardrop (Cello) Shaped Body

Teardrop shaped bodies have broader shoulders and bust, narrow waist, and wider hips, similar to the hourglass but with a slightly wider upper body. 

The distinct features include a fuller bust and shoulders with a well-defined waistline and rounded hips. 

What to wear: 

Structured tops, dark-coloured bottoms, A-line skirts, dresses and wrap dresses and tops, high-waisted pants and jeans and statement accessories. 

What not to wear: 

Tight-fitting bottoms, horizontal stripes on the hips, baggy tops, excessive ruffles or embellishments on the hips, low rise bottoms and straight cut dresses.
